End Zero Tolerance Policies. Provide The Help Our Students Deserve. Support Today’s Youth.

The Elevate Program aims to address and reduce drug-related suspension and expulsion rates in Orange County schools by providing the community education, uplifting youth, decriminalizing substance use, and provide QTBIPOC youth with trauma informed counseling. The Elevate program goals are to disrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline that disproportionately affects Black, Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, Disabled, Foster, and Houseless youth; combat the detrimental impacts from the War on Drugs within middle schools and high schools; reframe substance abuse as a public health issue rather than a criminal justice crisis; and educate youth on restorative justice practices and how they can be implemented in their communities.

Schools should be a place where students are allowed to dream big and thrive in their own skin. By giving students the proper resources and tools, we can give them that opportunity.  

 

Hay que poner en alto las políticas de cero tolerancia. Hay que proveer la ayuda que nuestros estudiantes merecen. Hay que apoyar a los jóvenes de hoy. 

El programa de Elevate trata de solucionar y reducir las tasas de suspensiones y expulsiones relacionadas a las drogas en las escuelas del condado de Orange. Ofrecemos educación a la comunidad, apoyo a nuestros jóvenes, despenalizar el consumo de sustancias, y proveer jóvenes QTBIPOC con consejería informada sobre trauma. Las metas del programa Elevate es de interrumpir el túnel de la escuela a la prisión que afecta desproporcionadamente a la comunidad black, Latinx, indigena, LGBTQ+, personas discapacitadas, jóvenes en custodia temporal, y sin hogar; combatir los impactos detrimentales de la Guerra contra las drogas en nuestras escuelas secundarias y preparatorias; redefinir el tema del abuso de sustancias como un tema de salud pública en vez de crisis de justicia penal; y educar a jóvenes sobre prácticas de justicia restaurativa y como pueden ser implementadas en su comunidad.

Las escuelas deben ser un lugar donde los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de soñar en grande y de prosperar en su propia piel. Dándoles los recursos y las herramientas adecuadas, les podemos dar esa oportunidad.

Since the beginning of the War on Drugs, schools have adopted drug-related zero tolerance policies which have led to harsh disciplinary action against students. Statistically, these drug-related zero tolerance policies in schools have affected Queer, Transgender, Black, Indigenous, People of Color (QTBIPOC) causing them to be punished harshly through suspension and expulsion; eventually causing their push out from the school system. Many QTBIPOC youth have fallen victim to zero tolerance policies and were not given the proper tools to address trauma that may be steering their behavior in a negative way. 

Desde el comienzo de la guerra contra las drogas, las escuelas han adoptado políticas de cero tolerancia cuando se trata de drogas que ha resultado en castigos graves hacia los estudiantes. Estadísticamente, estas políticas de cero tolerancia contra las drogas han afectado a estudiantes queer, transgenero,  negros, indígenas y de color, causando que sean dirigidos fuera de las escuelas. Muchos estudiantes QTBIPOC han caído víctimas a estas políticas y no se les ofreció el apoyo adecuado o herramientas necesarias para abordar trauma que puede estar dirigiendo su comportamiento de una manera negativa

The LGBTQ Center strives to offer support and resources to Orange County LGBTQ+ Youth and Young Adults.
