Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento
In January 2007, Supervisor Sarmiento was appointed to the Santa Ana City Council to represent Ward 1. He was formally elected in November 2008 and re- elected in November 2012 and November 2016. In November 2020, Supervisor Sarmiento was elected as Mayor of Santa Ana. Despite being the hardest hit city in Orange County by the pandemic, Santa Ana eventually became the city with some of the lowest rates of COVID-19, and some of the highest vaccination rates. Additionally, Santa Ana became a model for other municipalities in recognizing the sacrifices essential workers were making during this difficult time and providing them with premium pay. Under his leadership, the rights of tenants and renters were protected; investments were made in youth programs; a legal defense fund was created to support immigrants, documented and undocumented; there was an increase in affordable housing for very low and extremely low-income residents; a Police Oversight Commission was created; and the diversity of Santa Ana residents was celebrated through various inaugural cultural events.
