Supporting Prevention, Education, and Connection, Through LGBTQ+ Recovery Uplift Models (SPECTRUM)

About:
The mission of the program is to establish a comprehensive opioid and stimulant use prevention, education, outreach, and treatment referral programs for 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities across Orange County.
Goals:
– Building a Treatment Referral Program to inclusive and affirming treatment centers in Orange County.

– Distributing overdose reversal medication (Narcan) and fentanyl testing strips at no cost.
– Changing the narrative to challenge stigma and reframe the conversation around substance use, mental health, and wellness through storytelling and advocacy.
– Producing Social Media Campaigns to educate the local Orange County community around opioid and stimulant use prevention.
– Creating partnerships with local organizations and groups to raise awareness, visibility, and education.
– Developing educational materials for the general public and professionals who work in the substance use and opioid prevention field

Volunteer Opportunities:
You’re invited to join the LGBTQ Center OC’s Spectrum Advisory Committee!
The purpose of the Spectrum Advisory Committee is to inform and educate the Orange County community about the effects of opioid and stimulant use prevention. This committee is part of a larger effort to support prevention, education, and outreach through a 2S/LGBTQIA+ inclusive lens. We welcome 2S/LGBTQIA+ young adults, adults, and allies who are over the age of 18+ to join us for this collaborative opportunity!
Some of the committee activities include:
– Narrative Change: Challenge stigma and reframe the conversation around substance use, mental health, and wellness through storytelling and advocacy
– Social Media Campaigns: Collaborate on various campaigns to educate the local Orange County community around opioid and stimulant use prevention
– Culturally-Responsive Outreach and Community Engagement: Participate in different community events and help share resources to the community
– Educational Workshops: Help lead workshops focused on life saving overdose prevention, healthy coping strategies, and more
– Volunteer Service: Community Service/or Volunteer Hours are available to be signed off on upon request.

Planning meetings will take place the second Wednesday of the month in the evening from 6 – 7:30 PM but can be subject to change.

Pride in Prevention: A Monthly Substance Use & Opioid Prevention Workshop Series

The LGBTQ Center OC’s Spectrum Program is thrilled to announce a five-part in-person educational workshop series that will cover essential topics!

There is free Narcan Training and Life-Saving Prevention Kits with each session with interactive discussions, thought-provoking activities, and opportunities for meaningful engagement with fellow participants. We will explore ideas, share experiences, build our understanding, and learn how we can work together to create a brighter future for the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community in Orange County.

Here are the upcoming topics we’ll be exploring:

Wednesday, May 27th, 2026: Risk Factors among the 2S/LGBTQIA Community
Time: 7 PM – 8:30 PM Pacific Time
Hosted: in-person and online/zoom

This workshop will introduce participants to what the risk factors for the 2S/LGBTQIA entails and how it leads to unhealthy coping with substance use. There will be activities discussing why individuals turn to substances, coping strategies, and ways to support 2S/LGBTQIA Youth and Young Adults. There will be free Narcan and Fentanyl Testing Strips offered to participants.

Wednesday , June 24th, 2026: Creating an Affirming and Welcoming Space
Time: 7 PM – 8:30 PM Pacific Time
Hosted: in-person and online/zoom

This workshop will introduce participants to why affirming, welcoming, and inclusive spaces are needed for 2S/LGBTQIA Youth and Young Adults, especially in treatment centers. There will be activities, free items (ex: pro-LGBTQIA signage, flags, buttons, etc.) provided to participants to show their pride or allyship. There will be free Narcan and Fentanyl Testing Strips offered to participants.

Community service and volunteer hours are available upon request.
