STAY COOL WITH OUR HOT SUMMER EVENTS! – AUGUST 2019

Friends of the LGBTQ Center OC,

Summer is blazing forward, and already this season has given us a heat wave of fun, excitement, and togetherness. We began the summer with an official release of the LGBTQQ+ Student Bill of Rights, which aims to help school districts in transforming education environments into places that are safe, affirming, and understanding of LGBTQQ+ student issues and needs. We are proud to partner Youth First Orange County with the California Ed Code to establish a clear set of rights and standards to serve as a model moving forward.

July recently came to a close with one of our most popular events of the year: Trans Pride 2019! As the only Trans Pride event in Orange County, we couldn’t be happier to see how much the event has grown. This year was bigger and better than ever, with services, entertainment, and vendors on the city square as well as throughout our CO4 location. We are grateful for our sponsors, community partners, volunteers, and incredible Trans Committee who made July 27th’s event possible.

We’ve done so many fun things this summer, but it’s not over yet! You can look forward to more exciting events and opportunities this season and beyond. Join us for our 2nd annual Sip-tember, a wine & socializing event this September. Keep your fall schedule open, because we have Hallween Spooktacular coming your way once again on October 12th. For sposnorship opportunities, contact Jasmine Rara at jasmine.rara@lgbtqcenteroc.org or (714) 953-5428 x.212.

Thank you, as always, for being a part of our LGBTQ Center OC family. Stay cool this August!

Our very best,

Peg Corley

Executive Director, LGBTQ Center OC

LGBTQQ+ STUDENT BILL OF RIGHTS

Youth First Orange County (YFOC), a coalition of students, parents, educators, organizers, and community organizations who advocate for safe, inclusive, and discrimination-free schools for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQQ+) students. The YFOC LGBTQQ+ Student Bill of Rights is aligned with California Ed Code and provides a model for creating LGBTQQ+ positive, affirming, and protective classrooms and campuses. The Resolution calls for school districts to:

  1. Dedicate funding for services, trainings, resources, and events that intentionally create safe and welcoming schools for LGBTQQ+ students.

  2. Establish an LGBTQQ+ Task Force to provide implementation and oversight for applicable laws and associated LGBTQQ+ affirming and protective programming.

  3. Develop a district-level leadership LGBTQQ+ Liaison who will direct matters related to the safety and well-being of all students, specifically those in the LGBTQQ+ community.

QUEER PROM RECAP

Queer Prom is one of our most popular youth events of the year. This year’s space-themed dance was truly out of this world! With over 150 youth in attendance, the night was a hit amongst our youth with plenty of food, fun, entertainment, and dancing to go around! For many of our youth, this is the only space they have to feel welcomed and accepted as their authentic selves. Many youths miss out on their own school proms, and Queer Prom is a place for them to be able to enjoy the fun milestones in life, like every teen deserves!

We want to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors at Arbonne Charitable Foundation, as well as our community partner, the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, for an incredible performance. Thanks for making it a magical night!

THE SUCCESS OF TRANS PRIDE 2019

The 5th annual Trans Pride was a HUGE success. Our Transitions Health and Wellness Committee volunteered countless hours of their time to build up a fantastic event, which brought life and togetherness to DTSA. We had a record number of resource vendors, partners, entertainers, free services, photo opportunities, and much more! Guests and collaborators from all over the OC community came to participate in workshops, teaching the community about the various needs and interests of the transgender community, offering wisdom as topics such as medical help, legal help, mental health, fashion, clothing, preserving history, and much more.

We want to give a special shout-out to our sponsors this year. Trans Pride 2019 would not have been the same without you!

We want to thank our community partners as well, who donated their time, talents, and resources to help out at Trans Pride 2019. Thank you to AJ Singleton, SkyDive, the 501st Legion, Leilani Lopez, the Trans Chorus of LA, Christine Barker Photography, Evey Rosenbloom, Project Q, and American Tiger MAS!

Our Transitions Health and Wellness Committee is the heart and soul of Trans Pride and all Trans-related events throughout the year. Their hours of dedication and volunteerism help make each event a hit. Thank you, Trans Committee, for all of your hard work. Congrats on another successful Trans Pride! #TransPride2019

OUT AT THE FAIR WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Our new partners, OC Fair, in collaboration with Out At The Fair®, made ground-breaking history on Sunday, July 28th, with their very first Out at the Fair® Pride event! The LGBTQ Center OC was proud to participate in the fun-filled day. With Pride representation and enthusiastic representation everywhere, it felt like a truly celebratory and inclusive space!
